After multiple rounds of talks with leaders of farmers’ organisations, the Delhi Police gave conditional permission to protesters to march from Ramlila Maidan to Jantar Mantar on Friday.
The police wanted the march to be concluded at Ramlila Maidan as there were around 25,000 farmers gathered for the rally, but the All India Kisan Sangharsh Samiti Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) refused to back down.
A police official said that after several rounds of meeting with the AIKSCC, it was decided that the march be allowed till Jantar Mantar but that the rally should end before sunset.
The police also issued a circular citing Supreme Court orders that gathering of more than 1,000 protesters would not be allowed at Jantar Mantar.
“We made elaborate security and traffic arrangements in and around Jantar Mantar area. Around 2,000 police personnel secured the march that ended smoothly and peacefully,” said Madhur Verma, DCP (New Delhi).
The traffic on the rally route, via Guru Nanak Chowk-Ranjit Singh Flyover-Tolstoy Marg, was affected during the day but resumed normalcy shortly after the march ended.
No major traffic congestion was reported in Connaught Place.
The traffic police kept posting traffic updates on their social media platforms.
Around 300 traffic police men were deployed near Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Maidan.
