Chief Minister-designate Arvind Kejriwal has been given Z-plus category security by the Delhi Police as per protocol. Over three dozen personnel, besides pilot and escort vehicles, will be part of the security cover.

Adequate access control measures will also be taken at his residence.

The Delhi Police are in constant touch with their counterparts in neighbouring Ghaziabad to ensure smooth handover of the arrangements.

The first time Mr. Kejriwal took over as Delhi Chief Minister in December 2013, he refused security despite several attempts by the Delhi Police to convince him.

Stating that god is his biggest security, Mr. Kejriwal had in response to a Delhi Police letter said: “As I have already informed earlier, I don’t need any security. I do not need any escort or personal security officer.” However, he had sought help in crowd management or security at a few places where he could get mobbed. “However, despite the refusal, we had to provide him security wherever he went,” recalled a senior police officer.

The Union Home Ministry takes a decision on providing Z-plus security cover, either on the basis of threat perception or the official position of the protectee.
