Court remands accused OC officials to custody

Updated - November 28, 2021 09:33 pm IST - NEW DELHI

A court here on Thursday remanded former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee joint director-general T. S. Darbari and deputy director-general Sanjay Mahendroo to judicial custody till December 8 and former OC treasurer M. Jeyachandran to two-day CBI custody.

The three had been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigations on November 14 for alleged irregularities in payments made to an UK-based firm A. M. Car and Van Hire Ltd for transportation services during the launch of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR). The CBI registered another case on the same date against the trio for hiring of video screens from AM Films Ltd for the QBR.

Counsels for Mr. Darbari, Mr. Mahendroo and Mr. Jeyachandran told the Special Judge (CBI) A. S. Yadav that there was no need for separate FIRs as the “allegations are somewhat similar” in both cases and asked why the trio have not been arrested under the second FIR. The CBI counsel responded that it was the prerogative of the investigating agency to register cases as it deems fit and to conduct arrests.

Counsels for the accused trio will now move an application for anticipatory bail in the second case on November 30. While the application for regular bail for Mr. Darbari and Mr. Mahendroo will come up for hearing on December 8, Mr. Jeyachandran will be produced in court on November 27.

While Mr. Darbari and Mr. Mahendroo were arrested on November 15, Mr. Jeyachandran was arrested on November 21. The court also allowed Mr. Darbari and Mr. Mahendroo to receive medical examination before being taken to judicial custody.
