A special court on Tuesday granted bail to suspended Delhi government Principal Secretary Rajendra Kumar in a corruption case.
Mr. Kumar is the first accused to get bail in the case.
Granting bail, subject to Mr. Kumar furnishing a bail bond of Rs. 1 lakh with one surety of a like amount, Special Judge Arvind Kumar said: “No purpose will be served by keeping the accused behind bars.”
“The accused is a resident of Delhi and has roots in society. The accused is in custody for 23 days,” the Judge said, while ordering the release of the senior officer.
“The allegations as to whether the company Endeavour Systems Private Limited (ESPL) was promoted at his behest or in what manner he was concerned with the same can only be analysed during the course of the trial,” the Judge added.
“Thus keeping in view the overall facts and circumstances, the accused is admitted to bail on furnishing a personal bond in the sum of Rs, 1,00,000 with one surety of a like amount,” the Judge ordered.
The court asked Mr. Kumar not to make any effort to contact witnesses or interfere in the probe.
The CBI had arrested Mr. Kumar and four of his co-accused on July 4.
The investigative agency alleged that Mr. Kumar had promoted ESPL and by misusing his official position helped it in getting tenders of Rs. 9.5 crore through public sector company Intelligent Communication Systems India Limited (ICSIL).
The accused persons had entered into a conspiracy to award works to ESPL by designing pre-qualification criteria or without a calling tender, the CBI alleged.
There are a total of seven accused in the case. Six are still in jail. Three of them: Ashok Kumar, a private person; R.S. Kaushik, a former managing director of ICSIL; and Tarun Sharma, a Deputy Secretary in Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office, have also moved the court for bail.
