New City Police Commissioner K. Periaiah on Saturday said that he will focus on promptness in action for effective management of traffic, law and order and prevention of crime.
Addressing reporters after assuming charge, he said that traffic management and reducing accidents will be his priority. Recalling his experience during the recent floods in Chennai, where the police worked with the civic body to reduce hardships of the public, Mr. Periaiah said that joint action with various bodies, including Coimbatore Corporation will be mooted to create better roads and traffic conditions in the city.
Mr. Periaiah replaced A. Amalraj, who has been posted as Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi city.
Prior to his present post, Mr. Periaiah served as the Additional Commissioner of police (Traffic), Greater Chennai Police. He has also served as Superintendent of Police of the Special Task Force, Superintendent of Police in four districts and Deputy Inspector General of Police - Training and Home Guards.
Inspector General of Police by rank, Mr. Periaiah had joined in the service as DSP in 1989 and later conferred with the IPS. He is a recipient of President’s police medal for gallantry in 1997, Chief Minister's medal for gallantry, bravery and heroic action in 2004 for operation against Veerappan, Chief Minister's medal for gallantry in 2004 for anti-Naxalite operations in Dharmapuri and President's medal for meritorious service in 2005 among others.
An alumnus of the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, Coimbatore, Mr. Periaiah has won several titles in university and national level sports and athletics championships.
