Sewage treatment plants to be set up at four places to treat effluents

Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami said that ₹ 263 crore project is being implemented through the Salem Corporation to prevent release of untreated effluents into River Thirumanimutharu.

Speaking after inaugurating the Government exhibition near the New Bus Stand here Sunday, Mr.Palaniswami said, “sewage treatment plants would be set up at Anaimedu, Vandipettai, Mankuttai and Palikuttai to treat and release effluents into River Thirumanimutharu.”

Mr. Palaniswami thanked the Centre for taking steps to clean River Cauvery. He added that on behalf of the State, steps would be taken to prevent pollution of River Bhavani, Thamiraparani, Amaravathy and Vaigai.

The Chief Minister said that once the Cauvery-Godavari interlink project is realised, the delta region would receive 125 tmc of water. He said that under the Kudimaramathu scheme 1, 829 lakes are being desilted at a cost of ₹500 crore this year.

He added that he would be inaugurating desilting works of lakes in panchayat unions in Thiruvallur on August 7.

Mr. Palaniswami said that 36 government exhibition have been conducted in Salem till date and since the inception of the programme in 1978, 204 government exhibitions have been held in the State.

The Chief Minister said that steps are being taken to start the new Law College allocated for the district shortly.

He later inaugurated ₹13 crore worth completed projects of various departments and distributed welfare schemes of various departments worth ₹ 17.96 crores to the beneficiaries.

As many as 27 government departments and seven government-based organisations have set up pavilions as part of the 45-day fair.

Farmers stage protest

Farmers ,who would be affected by the Green Corridor project, staged a protest near the exhibition venue as they were not allowed to meet the Chief Minister to submit petitions against the project.
