In commemoration of World Diabetes Day, a human chain was formed at Napier Bridge, an initiative of M.V. Centre for Diabetes, a wing of M.V. Hospital for Diabetes in association with Indian Coast Guard Regional.
The theme for this year, instituted by United Nations Organisation, is ‘Protect our Future,’ which emphasises on the urgent need for action to protect against diabetes and its related diseases by engaging millions of people to spread awareness on diabetes, its preventive and management measures.
Also a 60-second public awareness film, written and directed by Vijay Adhiraj, was released on the occasion.
Community outreach
As part of a community outreach programme, ‘Diabetes Care on Wheels,’ a vehicle which will go to many residential places and other areas to impart education on complications of diabetes, especially on foot, was launched.
In his address, Vijay Viswanathan, Managing Director, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes and Professor M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre, said “The vehicle will also conduct a few tests for diabetes at a subsidised cost.”
Officials from Indian Coast Guard, Inspector General S.P. Sharma; Deputy Inspector Generals Gurupdesh Singh; Deputy Inspector General B.K. Loshali; and doctors from M.V. Centre for Diabetes, R.D. Shedbalkar and S.K. Verghese and others were part of the campaign.
