Sensex snaps 5-week gains on profit-booking

Stocks: The BSE benchmark Sensex snapped its five-week gaining spree by slipping 195 points on profit-booking from domestic funds and retail investors in Fast Moving Consumer Goods and Capital goods counters.

Selling activity intensified mainly in the last two trading sessions of the week. Investors also sold shares to make room for investment in the initial public offer (IPO) of Coal India.

The BSE Sensex fell by 194.78 points, or 0.95 per cent, to settle the week at 20,250.26 from its last weekend’s level on concerns over valuations and ahead of the Q2 results from corporates.

The Sensex had gained by 2,446.63 points, or 13.59 per cent in the last five weeks.

The S&P CNX Nifty also fell 39.95 points, or 0.65 per cent, to 6,103.45 from its last week end’s level.

However, the BSE Mid-Cap index rose by 116.90 points or 1.42 per cent and the BSE Small-Cap index rose by 108.88 points or 1.05 per cent.

Foreign funds continued their buying spree during the current week. Net equity inflow in 2010 now stands at a record $21.42 billion, above last year’s $17.45 billion, as per data from the Securities & Exchange Board of India (Sebi).

The Sebi data includes FII inflow through primary and secondary market route.

India’s largest steel maker by sales Tata Steel was the biggest Sensex loser the week. The stock fell 6.11 per cent.

FMCG major Hindustan Unilever fell by 4.50 per cent.

Private sector lender HDFC Bank declined 3.84 per cent.

Other Sensex losers were, Bharti Airtel (3.78 per cent), ITC (3.79 per cent), HDFC (down 3.24 Per cent), ONGC (3.13 per cent) and Larsen & Toubro (2.71 per cent).

However, India’s second largest telecom operator by sales Reliance Communications was the biggest Sensex gainer of the week by gaining 7.22 per cent.

Infrastructure developer Jaiprakash Associates rose 6.41 per cent. India’s largest aluminum maker by sales Hindalco Industries was the third biggest Sensex gainer which gained by 5.02 per cent.

Index heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL) jumped 4.15 per cent to Rs 1,048.25. Other gainers were Cipla 4.06 per cent, Tata Power Company 2.36 per cent, ACC 1.80 per cent, Maruti Suzuki India by 0.99 per cent and Wipro by 0.27 per cent.

Among the sectoral indices, the BSE-FMCG index dropped by 117.06 points or 3.13 per cent and the BSE-Capital Goods by 177.84 points or 1.08 per cent while the BSE-Healthcare index shot up 198.22 points or 3.25 per cent and the BSE Oil&Gas rose by 202.32 points or 1.91 per cent.

Total turnover of the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange rose to Rs 32,268.85 crore and Rs 92,930.89 crore, respectively during the week from its last weekend’s level of Rs 25,093.69 crore and Rs 84,235.67 crore.
