Caste census

The inclusion of caste in Census 2011 will have both advantages and disadvantages. It will give a clear picture of the status of various castes across the country — vital information that needs to be recorded. Our diversity will be highlighted to the world through such an exercise. But the data may be misused by politicians to play caste politics. Also, it can lead to agitations similar to the Gujjar agitation. There is a fairly good chance that the exercise may instil a sense of insecurity among the castes with lesser numbers.

It is an act of hypocrisy and self-deceit to resent a headcount on the basis of caste. A caste census will provide the latest numbers and will serve as a very useful tool for future guidance in the matter of reservation for the under-privileged sections.
