The Union Ministry of Power has set in motion the process of conducting a feasibility study for setting up a 4,000 MW ultra mega power project (UMPP) in Nagapatinam district.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Power Bharatsinh Solanki said the Ministry had identified the site for the project.
The study is being done by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and the Power Finance Corporation (PFC).
“The CEA and the PFC have been asked to examine the feasibility of the site as suggested by State government,'' Mr. Solanki said.
Second such project
If everything goes well, the Nagapattinam UMPP will be the second such big project in State. It already has got one such project at Cheyyur in Kancheepuram district.
The project is at the pre-bid stage. The Union Government plans to add about 1,00,000 MW of power, of which a lion's share would be contributed by such UMPPs.
It has awarded four such projects — at Sasan (Madhya Pradesh), Tilaiya (Jharkhand) and Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). ADAG firm Reliance Power Limited is developing these three projects. Tata Power is developing the fourth project at Mundra in Gujarat.
