Deputy Superintendent of Police, Alappuzha, B. Ravindra Prasad, who was injured during a mock drill here on Tuesday, died early on Wednesday.
Mr. Prasad, 52, suffered grievous injuries when he was caught between a wall and a speeding fire engine, which dragged him and ran over the lower part of his body.
Though he was taken to the T.D. Medical College Hospital and operated upon twice, he could not be saved.
Efficient officer
Mr. Prasad was an officer known for his gentleness as well as efficiency and speed. Among his achievements was the cracking of the sensational Karanavar murder case.
A native of Mavelikara, he is survived by his wife and two daughters. Mr. Prasad's body was kept for public viewing at the Alappuzha South Police Station and the SP Office before being taken to Mavelikara, where the funeral will be held on Thursday.
The drill was conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in association with the district administration at the PWD Rest House near the Alappuzha Beach.
It was mainly to test the preparedness of the district machinery, including the police, fire and rescue forces and medical services to emergencies. The mock drill had Mr. Prasad rushing to a bomb blast scene.
Minutes before the accident, he alerted, as part of a procedure, hospital authorities that he would bring in “possible casualties.''
It was a tragic irony that he himself became a casualty.
Major General V.K. Dutta, NDMA senior specialist in Capacity Building Mock Exercises; District Collector P. Venugopal, District Superintendent of Police A. Akbar and Revenue Divisional Officer A. Gopakumar were present at the spot when the accident took place.
