Supreme Court protects couple from ‘khap’ fury

June 06, 2015 02:36 am | Updated 02:36 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Supreme Court on Friday came to the rescue of a newly-wed inter-caste couple under death threat from a ‘khap panchayat’ in Faridabad.

A vacation Bench of Justices Prafulla C. Pant and Amitava ordered the Haryana police to provide security to the couple.

The apex court will continue to monitor the safety of the couple and asked both the Haryana and Delhi police to look into the threat and file response in four weeks.

Ashish, working in a public hospital in Delhi, and his wife Bharti, who claims to be a major, said they were threatened by their kin acting under the orders of the local khap.

The couple claimed that they had approached the police in Faridabad, but did not get any support.
