Hassan CMC workers demand housing facilities

March 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - Hassan:

Municipal workers, who have been demanding housing facilities in Hassan, staged a protest by pouring solid waste on themselves at a dumping yard in the district, on Saturday. For the last 22 years, municipal workers in Hassan City Municipal Council (CMC) have been fighting for housing facilities in the city.

Despite numerous reassurances from people’s representatives and officers in the past, many workers have passed away without this basic demand being met.

Nagaraj Hettur, leader of Ambedkar Sene, who led the protest, said that there were more than 100 permanent employees in Hassan CMC. They have been residing in Nirmala Nagar, where they do not have basic amenities.

“In each house, there are three-four families. These workers do all they can to keep the city clean, but do not have a home where they can lead a decent life,” he said.
