Stress on harnessing renewable energy

Environment-friendly renewable energy sources such as solar, wind power, biogas energy and geothermal energy and tidal energy are viable alternatives at present, experts said here on Monday.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day national-level workshop on renewable energy and smart grids in G. Pulla Reddy Engineering College here, experts said the demand for electrical power was constantly growing due to increasing use in domestic, commercial industrial and agricultural sectors.

P. Sreedhar, Executive director, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural energy development (MGIRED), Bengaluru, said the electric power generation was quite limited through conventional ways. Renewable energy sources were everlasting energy sources and environmental friendly. There was a huge scope for research, development, self employment and EDP through renewable energy sources, Dr. Sreedhar said.

Shobha Anand Reddy, Deputy director of MGIRED, Bengaluru, spoke on renewable energy sources and solar photo-voltaic systems, bio-energy plants and bio-fuels. Y. Pradeep, assistant professor of IIT, Hyderabad and member of Indian Smart Grid Senate spoke on smart grid applications.
