Buddhist temples targeted in Bangladesh violence

Angry protesters on Sunday torched at least five Buddhist temples and damaged over 100 homes in southern Bangladesh over a Facebook posting allegedly insulting the Quran, officials said.

The mob of several thousand people torched temples in Cox’s Bazar district, 350 km southeast of Dhaka, before dawn after learning about the posting by a presumed Buddhist, said Mohammad Zainul Bari, chief administrator of the district.

“The situation is now under control,” Mr. Bari said by phone.

Troops were deployed to restore order after a mob had vandalized more than 100 homes.

Demonstrators also demanded the arrest of the Facebook account holder.
