Panels urge govt. to collect tax arrears from defaulters

The Public Accounts Committee and the Estimates Committee of the Puducherry Assembly have asked the government to broadbase the taxation structure and collect entertainment and other taxes due from erring cable TV operators and owners of commercial buildings.

The panels, led by R. Siva and A. Anbalagan, said that non-payment of entertainment tax and property tax by several cable TV operators for years had resulted in loss of revenue to the government. In Oulgaret municipality, the number of households paying municipal tax was more than 54,000 while the number of cable TV connections was only 7,600. Mr. Siva said the panels will recommend to the government to recover the entertainment tax and arrears from the cable TV operators.
