Mumbai: Two labourers died after they fell from the 10th floor of an under-construction commercial building in Chembur (East) on Friday. The incident occurred in the space being developed by Shabari Group opposite RK Studios.

Ahmed Shaikh (32) and Rajendra Kohl (45) were working on scaffoldings on the 10th floor of the building. Eyewitnesses said the two lost balance and fell down. They were taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, where doctors declared them brought-dead.

“The incident occurred around 9.30 a.m. We rushed to the spot as soon as we received a call,” senior inspector Shashikant Mane of Govandi police station told The Hindu .

Shaikh and Kohl had arrived in the city with a group of labourers from Jabalpur over three years ago.

Shocked, most of their friends refused to speak. “I woke up to chaos. When I went out, I saw everybody run towards the site. The two were lying in a pool of blood,” one of his friends said.

“Officials at the site refused to let us help. While one of the two was lying still, the other was twitching,” Prakash Chavan, who resides in the neighbourhood, said.

Sonu Ansari, another neighbour, said, “It was frightening. We immediately called the police and ambulance.”

The police said their inquiry is on. “We are currently probing whether the two labourers were wearing safety gear. We have sent the bodies for post-mortem at Rajawadi Hospital, and will decide on the course of action after the report comes in,” Mr. Mane said.
