Mumbai: Quick reaction to a call for help from the colleague of a woman who had been stabbed led to the arrest of the assailant before he could leave the scene of crime. On Saturday, when a 27-year-old accountant working with a firm in Suryanagar, Vikhroli was assaulted with a sharp weapon on the office premises, her colleague called the police control room hotline ‘100’. “We were informed about the incident by the control room around 3.15 p.m. We reached the site before 3.30 pm and arrested the accused,” API S. Jamdade, Parksite police station, who is investigating the case, said.

She said the victim, whose identity has not been revealed, and accused Shabir Hassan (35) were in a relationship over 10 years ago. The victim has since married and has a seven-year-old daughter. Mr. Hasan, a resident of Suryanagar, is unemployed and had been stalking the victim for over three months and trying to convince her to elope with him. “ Prima facie it is a case of one-sided love. The victim confirmed they were in a relationship and that Mr. Hasan had a hard time moving on.”

Despite the harassment, the victim did not file a complaint against Mr. Hassan as she didn’t want her husband to know. “This is why she insisted on anonymity. Coming from a conservative background and a very closely-knit neighbourhood, it could lead to trouble in her personal life,” Ms. Jamdade said.

The victim was taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where she is admitted. The accused has been arrested for attempt to murder under IPC section 307.
