After cricket, football, and kabaddi, the next in row is a premier league to popularise Carnatic music.
Various organisations such as Abayam Creations and Carnatica will come together to launch a reality talent hunt to help music aspirants to make a career in classical music. Sangeeth Samraat — Carnatic Premier League 2015 will be launched on August 15 in search of talents in classical music across the globe.
The competition will be held in various categories from vocalists, instrumentalists to classical choir, corporate bands and to different age groups up to 30 years. While those aged below 12 will be crowned Sangeeth Bala Samraat, the best in the age group of 13-30 will win the title ‘Sangeeth Yuva Samraat.’
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Carnatic musician and creative head of the venture K.N. Shashikiran said: “What makes this talent hunt special is that title winner will be given opportunity to perform in 20 concerts during the December music season and also abroad. The participants will be trained by veteran musicians.”
Auditions are expected to be held in places such as Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore and Hyderabad and also abroad, such as the U.S., Singapore and Dubai. The auditions in Chennai will be held on August 22 and 23 at Mylapore Fine Arts Club. The regional winners will participate in the grand finale to be held in Chennai during January next year, said M. Krishnamurthy, secretary of Parthasarathy Swami Sabha.
Cleveland V.V. Sundaram, one of the founders of Cleveland annual Thyagaraja Aradana, said the venture would create a pathway to aspiring musicians and encourage youngsters to take up classical music as a career.
There are also plans to give away ‘La Grammy’ awards to the best among various categories, including musicians, instrument manufacturers and repairers. The programme will be telecast on Sankara TV from Thursdays to Saturdays. For details, candidates may log on to www.sangeethsamraat.com.
