CPI(M) wakes up to social media

Taking a cue from other parties, the Communist Party of India-Marxist is keen on making its presence felt on social media.

The CPI(M) city unit is envisaging a plan to set up a separate Cell to increase its connect with the public and to intensity its activities. The party will make Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube as platform to project the issues and problems faced by the people. The party will involve its youth wing along with professionals to strengthen the Cell.

“Though the voters have rejected us, the public always turns to us to fight for their rights and responsibilities. The welfare of the people is our primary aim,” says CPI(M) city secretary Ch. Babu Rao. “The new VMC will witness a vigilant CPI(M) taking an active role in scrutinising works. The party would use the tools of social media to highlight the issues of each division and would involve the public in the interaction. We will post facts and photos,” he says.

Social media has emerged as an effective tool for communication, and political parties cutting across ideologies have used it to the best-possible level. “We have our own social media cell and we will concentrate 24x7 to rejuvenate our party and win the trust of the people,” he says.

Conventional media, both electronic and print media, were gradually turning into puppets in the hands of the owners and the truth was often diluted before reaching the readers and viewers, he said. “Social media, though it has its own pitfalls, has emerged as the best form for communicating facts,” he says. Social media was misused by several political parties with fake hits and fake likes. “The hits were rigged. I do not say that social media is foolproof. But, it is by far an effective tool of communication”.
