With the State government relaxing the conditions in the use of premium floor area ratio (FAR) amount, the Mangaluru City Corporation has proposed to take up works on laying pavements and storm water drains in 11 areas here using the premium FAR amount of Rs. 100 crore, Mayor Harinath has said.

Talking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said that the government issued guidelines on July 18 simplifying the ways to make use of the premium FAR.

To start with, the corporation would take up the work on laying pavements and storm water drains at Bunts Hostel, Mallikatte, Kankanady and near the KSRTC bus stand. A detailed action plan was being worked out, Mr. Harinath said.

Premium FAR is the fees collected by the corporation for permitting addition of floor area to the original plan of the building. As per existing rules, this amount was meant for widening of the road next to which the building was located.

On May 28, 2015, the corporation asked the State government to relax the conditions and allow the use of premium FAR fund for other activities.

The government said that the amount could be used for widening an important road nearby the building.

It also allowed the use of the premium FAR on properties abutting roads being widened by the National Highways Authority of India and the Public Works Department for widening of roads including those connecting the airport, railway station and bus terminal.

Corporation commissioner Mohammed Nazirr said that the circular would help the civic body use the money for widening M.G. Road.

The State government had permitted use of this amount for works such as shifting of utility lines, construction of bus bays and bus shelters and payment of compensation for acquisition of lands necessary of widening roads.
