The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC)-Madurai Division has been operating additional buses to select destinations, including Chennai and Coimbatore, to clear extra rush in view of the holiday season.
Apart from the regular services operated to different cities from Madurai, additional services had been provided for Chennai, Coimbatore and Tirupur, said TNSTC General Manager A. Venkatachalam.
Speaking to The Hindu , he said that 38 additional buses were despatched to Chennai, 14 to Coimbatore and 17 buses to Tirupur. Depending on the requirement, the buses were drawn from neighbouring regions such as Virudhunagar and Dindigul and being operated to clear the extra rush.
Depending on the demand from the sectors, additional buses were being operated since the beginning of April. With summer vacation at its peak, there is more demand for places such as Chennai and Coimbatore. On weekends, there used to be a huge rush to Tirupur. Hence, depending on the requirement, the TNSTC was operating the additional services, he added.
A State Express Transport Corporation official said that almost all their buses were running full since the beginning of the summer holidays. “We expect the rush to continue till the first week of June.”
Passengers at the Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand said that the move of the TNSTC to operate additional buses had come in as a blessing in disguise since the fares of many private omni buses were very high while the government buses charged normal fares.
