Inspired by the newly released Rupee symbol, the Coimbatore-based Camford International School management went about a unique face painting exercise for its students.
As many as 340 students of the school painted the symbol in an effort to popularise it among the public. Prior to the face-painting exercise, the students were told about it in the school assembly.
The students proudly sported the symbol on their faces in colours of national symbols — national flag, tiger, lotus and peacock. The brain behind the exercise was the school chairman Arul Ramesh.
The design
So popular was the face-painting that even teachers came forward. Following a Government call, Udhaya Kumar, an IIT-Mumbai scholar, came up with the design, which is a combination of the Roman letter 'R' and Devanagari script 'Ra'. India is the fifth country in the world to have a symbol for its currency.
The Union Government will, in a few months' time, incorporate the symbol on the currency and computer.
