Protests marked the opening of the 19th edition of the Australian Fashion Week being held in Sydney.
People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) protesters, covered in body paint, stood outside Sydney’s Carriageworks multi-arts centre where the event is being held, carrying placards saying animals are “not ours to wear” and “animal prints, not animal skins”.
PETA spokeswoman Claire Fryer said representatives had asked fashion week organisers to ban fur at the event but they declined.
On Sunday night during the opening show by local designer Kym Ellery, an angry man leapt onto the stage saying “this is a disgrace” and screaming above the loud music which accompanied the show.
He wasn’t an invited guest, instead an angry resident who lives near the venue.
