Kavuthi-Vediyappan hills devastated by fire

February 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Tiruvannamalai:

The fire on Kavuthi-Vediyappan twin hills situated near here raged for days and destroyed large tracts of green cover on the hills.

It was in this twin hills that Jindal group attempted to get a license for iron ore mining but could not get one due to public resistance.

Based on protests raised at public hearing the Central Empowered Committee of Supreme Court denied permission to the project at the first instance. However the company filed a modified application seeking lesser land on the hill.

In this back drop, the twin hills were on flames for about two days. “Fire on the hills could be seen from Paliyapattu and other villages. The fire raged on and on for more than two days. It was visible even on Sunday morning. It destroyed most of the green cover,” said a villager.
