Idol lifters nabbed

Police have arrested a gang of seven idol lifters from their hideout near here on Wednesday.

Following a tip off that some idol lifters were camping at Kollumangudi near Peralam in this district, the police resorted to a vehicle check when they intercepted two persons on a bike. They came to know that Meiyyappan and Sakthivel of Karaikal was part of a gang of idol lifters.

The duo confessed that they had indulged in idol lifting in several places over the past few years and they were assisted by Anandraj (36), Remo (35), both from Karaikal, Swaminathan (34), Rahul (23), both from Cuddalore, Muthukumarasamy (37) of Sankaranpandal. Senior police officials are interrogating the secured persons on the whereabouts of stolen idols, their nature and other relevant details. Police have also launched a manhunt for two other persons involved in the cases.
