For the villagers of Melathiruvenkatanathapuram, Judge Srikanth Srinivasan, a probable judge for the US Supreme Court, he is the son of Srinivasan, who was the son of Padmanabhan, the man they know as a thread trader.
It is believed that Judge Srikanth Srinivasan is a strong contender to be nominated by President Obama to the Supreme Court in the vacancy caused by the death of Judge Antonin Scalia.
He was, in 2013, appointed to the Federal Appeals Court District of Columbia Circuit.
On Monday, as Judge Sri Srinivasan’s name made its appearance in media, the villagers organised special prayers.
“Though his family left the hamlet quite long back, it is a proud moment for all of us,” said Venkatasubramanian, one of the villagers. After he got a job in Chandigarh University, his father Srinivasan moved there, and that’s where Judge Srikanth Srinivasan was born. Later, in the 60, Professor Srinivasan moved to the University of Kansas with his family.
Though he has not visited the sleepy hamlet, situated about 6 km from Tirunelveli Town, the villagers are naturally keen to see him as the Judge of Supreme Court of America.
