• In the past I was fortunate to invite the probationers to my house in Delhi, but due to COVID-19, I have to let go of this opportunity. I am sure I will be able to meet you while in service. I want to hear the probationers.
  • Well being of cadre is important. Stress, workload and pressure due to work, everyone has it- farmers also suffers if it has rained more,. It is not something that cannot be managed. By scientific measures you can manage things. Your field always throws unexpected things. That is why regular training is required.
  • When you work in the field, then in your area there must be people who would talk on such issues. Invite teachers or experts once a month…I always tell people suffering from stress that yoga and pranayama , if you do it from heart, you will not feel the stress, however much the work load.  You will always be smiling.
  • PM Modi spoke to a Tamil Nadu cadre officer Kiran Shruti who mentioned how State police has measures for addressing the mental health of police officers
  • COVID is a huge challenge . Once Police meant danda (stick) and tu tu main main (confrontation), police meant zulm (atrocity), it had by and large become their image. That doesn’t mean police did not do humane work, but its collective impact never came to the fore.
  • During Corona, in every corner of country, Khaki (uniformed) were helping patients, serving food…country witnessed it. The humane face of khaki is instilled in people’s mind. I would like that all good work done by police should be documented. All future generations should know that humane behavior is powerful. One should be proud of khaki not arrogant.
  • While speaking to a J&K cadre officer Tanushree who has studied Textiles: what we read in newspapers everyday, the terror incidents are the main news. There are other issues from J&K, Ladakh Kargil….they are very nice people. We will be able to restore happiness in their life with everyone’s efforts. It is the strength of Kashmir — in every house, there is lot of talent. The kind of textile work they do is phenomenal. I have a suggestion for you, organise the women in a group of tens, interact with them and use your textile experience and their traditions to teach them modern designing. Will be an added advantage to your policing skills. You will feel connected to them. They are very sweet people and extremely nice and hospitable … we have to stop young children who go on a wrong path. In this area, our women force can help a lot. Stop the young kids from joining the wrong path by engaging their mothers.
  • Till now you were working as a trainee in a protective environment . But the situation will change overnight, the moment you step out of the academy. Their attitude towards you will change. Be over conscious, first impression is the last impression. Wherever you are transferred your image will follow. Be careful. When we come to Delhi, 2-3 people pile on. You don’t even come to know who these sevadars are. If you are caught in it, even if you face difficulties, only act as per your wisdom. Don’t put lock on your ears but place a filter instead, only when filtered things go to your brain, it will help you. Sift garbage and keep your heart clean.
  • Focus on cleanliness, how to sort files. Some policemen when they join a place, want to instill fear in public, those who watch movies like Singham, you are not able to perform your duty.
  • In Gujarat there is a new year after Diwali . Chief Ministers attend the function, I also went. The policemen stopped me from shaking hands with everyone, including constables. Someone said that they have hands that you will be infected by evening. I told them this is wrong, the image of police built during COVID is real…how can you change the character? Usually there is a confrontation between police and politicians, we should not forget we are in a democratic set up. Public representatives are important. I have trained under Atul who is now giving you training. Sometimes I broke law to shake hands with people.
  • Twenty years ago, Atul Karwal came to my chamber and expressed his anger with me, you cannot get down from your car. He looked me in the eye and told me, he did not budge even when I told him that you don’t own me. Atul asserted that you have to follow rules. But he expressed his thoughts, the way the police officer expressed him by respecting the importance of a public representatives.
  • Use technology . There are many people with technology background. There is no dearth of information, big data and artificial intelligence. Information on social media is an asset. When I was CM, there was a Constable in my security team. There was an email which couldn’t be cracked, he was Class 12 pass, he was able to crack it and then Home Minister P Chidambaram even felicitated him.
  • In last few years, the NDRF and SDRF, how they have performed …they have created a new identity for the police. Organize NDRF groups in your area, if you are able to help people during natural calamity, it is very good. Never underestimate training. In our country, training is considered a punishment. We have to come out of that mindset. I would like to complement Atul Karwal again. He has a technology background and has even climbed the Everest. He chose training. We have also launched Mission Karmyogi to highlight the importance of training.
