A historic verdict: Minister

Minister for Devaswom Kadakampally Surendran has described the Supreme Court verdict historic.

Mr. Surendran welcomed the verdict and said the government was opposed to discrimination on any count in any place of worship, including Sabarimala. The government had clarified its stance on women’s entry into Sabarimala when the present petition came up for hearing in the Supreme Court. This is a historical verdict, he said.

The concept of Sabarimala provided entry for all beyond caste and religion. The verdict clearly stated that imposing restrictions on women of a particular age amounted to violation of human rights. Human rights should not be denied in the name of faith as per the verdict, he said.

A decision on implementing the verdict would be made through consultations.
