79.77% polling in Wayanad

Polling for the Lok Sabha elections passed off peacefully in the district on Tuesday.

According to preliminary reports, 79.77% voters cast their vote in the Wayanad constituency. It was 73.29 % in the 2014 election.

As many as 10,89,819 voters, including 5,60,977 women, of the total 13,57,819 (6,84,807 women) cast their votes. The Kalpetta Assembly constituency recorded 80.88% , Sulthan Bathery 81.91%, Mananthavadi 81.54%, Thiruvambadi 81.09%, Ernad 81.53%, Nilambur 77.53%, and Wandoor 77.91% .

The district recorded 20.45 % polling by 10.20 a.m. The polling percentage rose to 74.14% by 5.28 p.m. No untoward incident was reported in the district, District Collector A.R. Ajayakumar said.

Long queues

Long queues, especially of women from plantations, were seen from early morning at most polling stations. Tribespeople also arrived in large numbers.
