Lok Sabha discusses transgender rights

With the Rajya Sabha being adjourned yesterday due to disruptions, the limelight is now on BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who challenged the expunging of his comments by the House Deputy Chairman, calling the decision as arbitrary, unreasonable and against the House rules.

6.00 pm: Lok Sabha adjourned till May 2.

5.40 pm: Anurag Singh Thakur, BJP, Hamirput, Himachal Pradesh spoke about the strength of the transgenders. "We do not know the actual figure of them in the country. I appreciate Madhya Pradesh as they gave an opportunity for them to make a mark in the society."

5.35 pm: Nishant Dubey of BJP asked the House to consider all options before passing the Bill.

5.00 pm: Dr. Ravindra Babu Pandula of TDP from Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh said, "Let us not encourage passing this bill. Being a transgender is a state of confusion."

4.20 pm: "It is necessary to give transgenders education, so that they can stand on their own feet. There should be no discrimination against them. Skill development and employment for them is necessary. Health care is the most important for them and they need free treatment in hospitals," says Prof Saugata Roy of AITC, Dum Dum (West Bengal).

"They should not be deprived of their rights," he added.

4.16 pm: Rajya Sabha adjourned till May 2, 2016.

4.00 pm: In reply to the ministers in Rajya Sabha, MoS Home Affairs Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary said that Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act has been helpful to the states. "Special Category Status to the state of Andhra Pradesh has made sure that the state will get Central Assistance," he said.

3.38 pm: Rights of Transgender Persons Bill is being discussed in Lok Sabha.

3.37 pm: "Now the people of Andhra Pradesh is facing financial problems. We request the government to look into this," says C.M. Ramesh of TDP, Telangana.

3.10 pm: Jesudasu Seelam in Rajya Sabha added, "Andhra Pradesh has been dealing with revenue issue for a while now. Financial outflows from Centre to Andhra Pradesh is very meagre."

3.00 pm: Hyderabad is a common capital and it will be the common capital, says Jairam Ramesh in reply to Jesudasu Seelam.

2.55 pm: "During the bifurcation process, the interest of the Andhra people was kept in mind and it was seen that the future of Andhra Pradesh is never endangered. The split provided various measures for growth. It wasn't just the formation of Telangana. It is in fact, the formation of a new Andhra Pradesh," says Jesudasu Seelam of INC, Andhra Pradesh in the Upper House.

2.00 pm: Ghulam Rasool Balyavi of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) spoke against the killing of two Muslim cattle traders in Jharkhand in March. The opposition came out in support of Balyavi and created a ruckus in the Upper House.

1:15 pm: Members of various parties in Lok Sabha opposed holding of the first phase of common entrance test for MBBS and BDS on May one saying it gives little time to students, with some of them also demanding that states be given time till 2018 to adapt.

12:17 pm: Members urge the government to implement the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test in 2018, in the wake of Supreme Court's order for its implementation this year. Students are already stressed, CBSE has said given the shortage of time it can take exams only in English and Hindi, it will cause further problems for students in various States who could earlier take the exams conducted by States in local languages.

11:15 am: P.J. Kurien says in RS that Chairman will examine the notice regarding breach of privilege and then take a further decision.
