From next year, the Foxconn unit in Sriperumbudur will start manufacturing various models of the iPhone, depending on demand.

This was announced at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday.

Foxconn has been manufacturing cell phones for various companies for the last one-and-a-half years here and iPhones will be a feather in the local unit’s cap, as it has a niche market.

Separate line

The company has created a separate manufacturing unit in its existing factory in Sriperumbudur, located on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway.

The company already employs a workforce of 15,000, with 90% of them being women. When the production of iPhones starts, the company will recruit more people, sources said.

Electricity Minister P. Thangamani managed to persuade the Foxconn management to stay the course in Tamil Nadu instead of moving to other States, sources in the government said.

With support from the State government, the manufacture of electronics goods in the State is now on a par with automobile industries, the sources added.
