A Bill to amend laws relating to Municipal Corporations in the State was introduced in the Assembly by Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani on Thursday.

The Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (Amendment) Act, 2015 will provide Corporations other than Chennai, the power to monitor and regulate the functioning of hotels and lodges. At present, the Madurai and Coimbatore Municipal Corporations do not have the provisions to regulate hotels, restaurants and boarding houses.

The amendments to the Madurai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1971 and Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Act, 1981 would enable these Corporations to monitor their functions from a health and sanitation view and issue licences.

As far as the Chennai Corporation is concerned, Section 279 of the Chennai Corporation City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919 and Section 249 of Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act, 1920 provide for licensing of such establishments.
