With the district experiencing a short, intense spell of rainfall, a 30-year-old woman died in a wall collapse at Kottapalayam in Thuraiyur taluk on Thursday night.

Selvi, the victim, had taken shelter in a mill along with her friends Rajamani and Pitchayi, who were grazing goats there, when the dilapidated wall gave away, police sources said.

Pitchayi, who sustained minor injuries, took the help of villagers nearby to pull Selvi’s body out of the rubble. The bodies of five goats were also pulled out of the debris.

Elsewhere in the district, the rain provided relief to residents reeling under the sweltering heat.

Thuraiyur taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 24 mm in the district during the last 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Friday. Rainfall in other places: Manapparai - 10.80 mm, Musiri - 7.5 mm, Srirangam - 8 mm, Thiruverumbur .3 mm, Tiruchi East - 12 mm, and Tiruchi West - 12.70 mm
