Kozhikode: The leaders of various students’ organisations, on Wednesday, held a preliminary discussion with the management of KMCT Polytechnic College at Kallanthode which was closed recently following a student agitation on fee hike and the alleged extortion of fine amount on the charges of violating discipline.
The student organisation leaders who attended the meeting said they put forth all major demands for the consideration of the management’s representative, but, an assurance to fulfill them on time was yet to come. One more discussion would be held on next Friday to know the management’s final stance on the concerns and the college would be allowed to reopen only after addressing the grievances properly, they said.
V.P. Dulkhifil, leader of the Kerala Students Union, said the main demand raised by the student organisation representatives at the meeting was to reduce the course fee and the practice of collecting heavy fine for small violations from students. “We have as well placed our demand to form a Parents Teachers Association at the earliest on the campus, besides an official students’ forum to take up students’ welfare issues with the management,” he added.

Eight students representing various students’ organisations including KSU, Students Federation of India, and Muslim Students Federation took part in the meeting. They also registered their displeasure over the absence of the College Principal and other senior management representatives at the meeting.
It was on last Monday that the college was indefinitely closed following a protest by KSU activists on the campus. The police had resorted to lathi charge as some of the irate students pelted the college building with stones and smashed the window panes.
