The Coimbatore District (Rural) Police on Tuesday registered three separate cases against evangelist Mohan C. Lazarus of Thoothukudi-based Jesus Redeems Ministries for his alleged remarks on temples in Tamil Nadu, a video on which was circulated on the social media.

The cases were registered against Mr. Lazarus under Sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code, based on complaints filed by two Bharatiya Janata Party functionaries and a Viswha Hindu Parishad worker from Karumathampatti, Sulur and Pollachi in the district, said a police officer.

The complainants alleged that Mr. Lazarus attempted to create division among various groups and religions through his remarks on Hindu gods, and temples at a function in Chennai in March 2016.
