25% pharmacies were open in Vellore

Several shops across the district were shut down on Tuesday as traders demanded the Centre to constitute Cauvery Management Board (CMB). Except for a few pharmacies in Vellore, the majority were closed in the district.

R. B. Gnanavelu, district secretary of Tamil Nadu Vannigar Sangangalin Peramaippu, said 60% of shops remained shut in response to the association’s call to demand the constitution of the CMB. Shops in Nethaji Market, Long Bazaar, old fish market, jewellery shops and hotels were closed in Vellore.

M. Duraikannan, president of Vellore District Chemists and Druggists Association, said over 80% pharmacies in the district were closed. “While a majority of pharmacies in places such as Tirupattur and Vaniyambadi were closed, around 20 to 25% pharmacies in Vellore remained open to cater to emergency requirements of people,” Mr. Duraikannan said.
