A medical student of Manipal University was raped by three men here late on Thursday night.

The student, who is from Kerala, was going to her residence outside the campus after studies at the university library around 11.30 p.m. when she was abducted in an autorickshaw by the three men, including the driver, and sexually assaulted. However, the police did not say where the assault took place.

The student, who sustained a fracture on a leg, is in the intensive care unit of Kasturba Hospital here and has undergone surgery.

After the sexual assault, the three men left her near her residence. Her roommates alerted the university administration and she was rushed to the hospital. The university authorities then informed the police, an official of the varsity said.

Superintendent of Police M.B. Boralingaiah told reporters that the student was yet to recover from anaesthesia. She was also in shock and was yet to talk to the police.

A case was registered at the Manipal police station on a complaint from K.S. Jaivittal, Estate Manager of Manipal University. A clear picture would be available only after the investigation was over, he said.

The student was staying in a flat outside the campus, he noted.

A university watchman had told the police about the place from where she was abducted. The incident was not recorded on the university’s CCTV cameras checked by the police.

“We will investigate this case thoroughly and bring the culprits to book. Security has been tightened on the campus. We are planning to set up a police outpost on the campus,” the SP said.
