India is the seventh in the list of the top 10 countries that are the target of web applications attack globally, according to a Akamai State of the Internet Q3 2017 Security Report. The United States of America tops the list, followed by Brazil. Asian neighbour China occupies the ninth position.
The report also places India seventh in the list of the top source countries for web applications attacks. India, which occupied the fifth position in Q2 2017, has moved down two positions in this quarter. However, the number of attacks sourced from the country has gone up and is a little more than 20 million now.
Data sourced from The World Bank showed that India has 10,350 secured servers, which, when put against a user base of 462 million internet users, is a clear indication of the need for better infrastructure to be able to support the data surge, said the press statement.

This information is particularly relevant in India as more and more people are moving from thinking of technological products as a necessity as opposed to aspirational. With the surge in internet users (close to 470 million, according to the statement), there is an increasing need to improve the existing security measures in individual, governmental and institutional levels.
Indian Computer Emergency Response Team has handled around 50,000 cyber security incidents from April to October this year, according to the statement. This "is a clear indication of the significant need for companies to scale up investments to ensure application and infrastructure security in the immediate future.”
