Twitter said it composed its top ten trends of the year by analyzing more than 25 billion tweets posted by the site’s 175 million users.

The Gulf Oil spill was the most tweeted topic on Twitter in 2010, the hit social news site announced Monday.

The site, which limits posting to 140 characters, said it composed its top ten trends of the year by analyzing more than 25 billion tweets posted by the site’s 175 million users.

The FIFA World Cup took the number two spot, and could also lay claim to two other positions in the top ten ranking thanks to a mention at No. 5 for the notorious vuvuzelas and tenth spot for the match-predicting octopus Paul.

The movie Inception was in third place, followed by the Haiti earthquake. Apple’s iPad took sixth spot, followed by Google Android, Justin Bieber and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

“The list of 2010 Twitter Trends reflects what’s happening in our world, demonstrates the power of turning any event or story into a shared experience, and underscores Twitter’s value as a real-time information network,” the site said in announcing the list.
