A Tezpur message says: Further particulars of the recent Duffla Raid have reached here [Calcutta]. The hill Dufflas, it is alleged, wanted to get back a girl whom the Dufflas on the plains in the British territory did not permit to go up hill. Some 4 or 5 men came down from the hill first and tried to persuade the Dufflas in the plains to let her go, but were unsuccessful. Then they left the place and some days after 300 hill Dufflas came down to take away the girl. A meeting was held in the evening and after a whole night’s discussion when they found the plain Dufflas did not yield, they began to attack them. It is reported that the hill Dufflas killed 5 men and a number of buffaloes, cows, pigs, etc., which they found on their way back. It is also said that they have taken away forcibly 69 men and perpetrated horrible atrocities on the way. It is understood that some 200 Dufflas living on the plains in different parts of the British territory are mustering strong in the Gohpur Mauza in order to prepare themselves for a further raid which they expect from the hill Dufflas in the near future. The plain Dufflas have approached Captain Nevill, the Political Officer, demanding the release of their men.
