Relatives caution against ‘manipulating’ investigation

Inconsolable kin: Relatives of the 40-year-old man who was killed by a gang of criminals, huddled in grief at his house near Jewar in Gautam Budh Nagar district on Thursday.

A day after the preliminary medical report of four alleged Jewar gang-rape victims ruled out sexual assault, the women threatened to immolate themselves if justice was not served.

A man was shot dead and four women of a family were allegedly raped by six criminals on the Jewar-Bulandshahr highway on the intervening night of May 24 and 25.

“The reports take 10-15 days. How can the police and doctors conclude they were not raped? They have gone through it, they know. In the morning, they said before the media that they would immolate themselves if the truth did not come out,” said a relative.

One of the relatives, who holds a prominent position in the Bhartiya Kisan Union, said the outfit would organise a gherao in the coming days if the police and administration “try to manipulate the investigation”.

On Saturday, the victims left around 2 p.m. to record their statement in front of the magistrate at the Noida court.

Union Minister Mahesh Sharma visited the family. “He reassured us that culprits will be behind bars soon,” said brother of the 40-year-old who was shot dead on Thursday. Alok Rawat of the National Commission for Women too met the family members.

The police have formed six-seven teams to investigate the case. “We suspect the involvement of a few gangs,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (Gautam Budh Nagar) Love Kumar.

On the medical reports of the victims, a senior police officer privy to the case said, “We never said they weren’t raped. We only said that spermatozoa were not found on the vaginal swabs. For deeper examination, their clothes have been sent to FSL [Forensic Science Laboratory] in Lucknow.”
