The Congress is caught in an awkward situation in Maharashtra with not just Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in neck-deep trouble in the Adarsh Housing Society scandal but several possible replacements for him also reported to be part of the scam, the Bharatiya Janata Party said on Monday.
BJP president Nitin Gadkari alleged that not only the Chief Minister's relatives but also his personal secretaries, personal assistants and others in his office had got the flats allotted to themselves at one-tenth the market price.
It was “constitutional breakdown” of the government machinery and Mr. Chavan should not be allowed to continue in office. But the Congress could not find a leader with a clean image in Maharashtra to replace him, the BJP chief said.

Talking informally to journalists here, Mr. Gadkari said he too was offered a flat in the Adarsh society but he refused to accept it as he felt that there was something wrong.
