Five Maoists who were arrested by the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday were remanded to police custody till July 11 by a court here on Wednesday.

The CID arrested State committee member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) Madhusudan Mondal alias Narayan alias Salim, Nandigram zonal committee member Siddhartha Mondal, technical wing member Sachin Ghoshal and two other members — Sanjay Mondal and Rajesh Mondal.

According to CID sources, Madhusudan Mondal was active in the Nandigram region of West Bengal's Purbo Medinipur district and played a covert role during the 2007-2008 movement against the chemical hub project in Nandigram, which forced the State Government to scrap the project.
