One more person has been arrested at Jhargram in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district for his alleged involvement in the May 28 derailment of the Jnaneswari Express.
More than 150 people died after a goods train smashed the derailed Jnaneswari Express.
“Lakhan Mahato was arrested and handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and was produced in court on Sunday,” Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma told The Hindu on the phone.
Lakhan Mahato was arrested on Saturday afternoon, and his mobile phone was seized. He was produced in the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Jhargram and remanded to police custody for 10 days, Kaushik Sinha, counsel for Lakhan Mahato, said.
“In the forwarding report submitted in the court, the CBI has said that during interrogation, Lakhan Mahato has admitted to being present at the scene of the crime,” Mr. Sinha said.
While several persons, including main accused Bapi Mahato and Manik Mahato, have been arrested, two key conspirators Umakant Mahato and Asit Mahato are still at large. The CBI has announced a reward of Rs. 1 lakh each for information leading to their arrest.
