Demanding answers from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the multi-crore Saradha scam, Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah said here on Sunday that the party would ensure that those involved in the scam are put behind bars.

Questioning why Ms. Banerjee was not out on the streets agitating for the 17 lakh people who lost their savings in the scam, Mr. Shah said: “Because her own party leaders are involved in the scam.” In the city to campaign for the Chowringhee Assembly seat by-election, Mr. Shah said the alleged involvement of certain leaders of All India Trinamool Congress would be the BJP’s principle political plank.

Mr. Shah accused Ms. Banerjee of being so engrossed in politics that she rarely paid any attention to development of the State. “If Didi [Ms. Banerjee] gave even half the time she spends in indulging in politics to developmental works, progress could have been achieved in Bengal,” he said.
