With the medical student in the Manipal gang-rape case giving her statement, the police have crossed a major hurdle in their investigations here.

A medical student of Manipal University hailing from Kerala was abducted by three persons in an autorickshaw and later gang-raped near Manipal on June 20. The student, who fractured her leg, is being treated at the Kasturba Hospital. The police had arrested two accused on June 27, while another accused who attempted suicide on the same day and admitted to the Kasturba Hospital, is in critical condition.

Addressing presspersons in Udupi on Tuesday, Pratap Reddy, Inspector General of Police (Western Range) said that the medical student had given her statement to the police on the evening of July 1. “She has given her statement in a proper and admissible manner. If necessary the police would seek more details or corroboration. The medical student and her family want their privacy to be respected”, he said.
