National kabaddi tournament for girls from Jan. 23

The 64th national kabaddi tournament for girls will be held at the Police Headquarters Stadium from January 23 to 27.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, Deputy Commissioner M. Deepa said the district received a rare opportunity to host the U-14 Girls’ Kabaddi tournament for 2018-19. Participants from 29 States and seven Union Territories will be taking part. Each team will have 12 participants, and sports officials from across the country will take part too, she said.

The responsibility is on the district administration to provide transportation, food, accommodation, medical facilities, and a good sports ground to the participants. Sub-committees were formed to monitor works and officials deployed for duties should promptly discharge the same, she said. As it is a national event, matches will be held through the day and night.

Minister in-charge of the district R.V. Deshpande will inaugurate the event on January 23. Mr. Deshpande will hoist the sports flag and Minister for Municipal Administration C.S. Shivalli will light the sports torch. MLAs Jagadish Shettar, Abbayya Prasad, ZP president Chaitra Shirur, MP Pralhad Joshi, and other elected representatives will be taking part.

Public Instruction Department Commissioner P.C. Jaffer, Deputy Commissioner Deepa Cholan, Police Commissioner M.N. Nagaraj, ZP CEO B.C. Sateesh and others will be special invitees.

A total of 44 teams and as many as 600 participants have already registered. Some more teams are expected to take part. Online registration has opened and 26 teams comprising 310 players have registered. The accommodation for the players has been made at Classic Institute Hostel and at JSS College hostel, Ms. Deepa added.

Dharwad MLA Amrut Desai, honorary president of the tourney, said Dharwad will extend total support to it. The officials of PWD, Sports & Youth Affairs have to completely involve themselves in the works and see that this event evokes a good response from the sports lovers, he said.
