Four front seats damaged; BEST driver had no knowledge due to change in route

Trouble in height: A BEST bus’s roof ripped off after crashing into an overhead barricade near Santacruz.

Mumbai: A BEST double decker bus crashed into an overhead height restriction barricade on the Western Express Highway at Vakola on Tuesday. Four front seats of the bus were damaged, but no one was injured. The accident occurred near the Reliance Energy office at 10.40 a.m. when the bus was heading towards Vakola from Andheri SEEPZ.

Bus driver Milind V. Masurkar, the police said, wasn’t aware of the height barricade because the route of the vehicle was changed to clear the passengers stranded due to heavy rain and the bridge collapse at Andheri railway station.

Kailashchandra B. Avahad, senior police inspector, Vakola police station, said due to heavy rain, the route of the bus was changed at the last minute. “This was the reason the driver had no idea about the overhead barricade. No casualties were reported as the upper deck of the bus was empty. In the lower deck, there were three passengers, and everyone is safe,” Mr. Avahad said.
