With the failure of borewells in homes and depleting groundwater levels in the city, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has a tough task cut out this summer. In order to deal with any problem that arises, the Water Board had come up with a detailed contingency plan of Rs.70 crore.

Along with proposed dedicated electricity lines, the Water Board is banking on the Krishna Phase-III project to ease the demand for water in peak summer this year. “By March 31, 45 million gallons per day (MGD) of water will come in, which will be a big relief. May, June and July are always critical months in summer.

Hopefully, an additional 45 MGD of water from the Krishna phase-III project will come by then,” said M. Jagadeeshwar, Managing Director, HMWSSB.

Mr. Jagadeeshwar said that the Water Board had requested the electricity board to install dedicated power lines at a few places to pump water without any problem.

“We have proposed to set up a 132 KV feeder main from Sadashivpet to Peddapur, and another 6.6 KV at Mailardevpally, where we have clear water pumping sites,” he said.

Apart from that, the Water Board will also supply free tankers to parts of the city, where water supply is sparse during summer months. “They will be sent to places where supply is less, and also, we will take up repairs of hand pumps wherever necessary.

Apart from that, leakages will also be fixed in the city,” said the Managing Director.

“We will try to minimise the problems for people. The additional 45 MGD will no doubt help us in easing the situation in summer. And if needed, there will also be emergency pumping from the Himayatsagar and Osmansagar lakes,” Mr. Jagadeeshwar added.
